SAW PALMETTO The supplement saw palmetto has been shown to decrease the risk that benign prostatic hypertrophy will wake you up at night. But when you look for it, you need to check for ones with the ingredient beta sitosterol—the substance that’s correlated with decreased swelling. Half of the saw palmetto products on the market don’t contain any. Take 160 milligrams twice a day.

Men might also consider taking 2 grams of L-arginine, an amino acid found in pumpkin seed and other foods listed below, and 500 milligrams of L-citrulline twice a day. It’s been rumored that taking these together (we wish the data were stronger than rumor) will increase nitric oxide production by the inner layer of your arteries, thus increasing blood flow, which can prevent erectile dysfunction as well as increase sperm count. These two twice a day just might (the data are not stronger than that) decrease all other forms of arterial aging, like heart disease, stroke, memory loss, peripheral vascular disease, and skin wrinkling. Foods high in these two substances: almonds, cocoa and real chocolate, garbanzo beans, peanuts, salmon, soy, and walnuts.

Action 3: Detect Intruders

As we explained in the introduction, this book gives you news you can use to live younger and better; we’re going to avoid “see your doctor” advice the way skiers avoid trees. But when it comes to serious conditions that can affect your important sexual organs, you need regular checkups to detect the presence of viruses and other enemy invaders. So unless you have the schooling and the ability to bend like a paper clip, we don’t think you can do these tests on your own. Men over fifty—or over forty, if there’s a family history of prostate disease—need to have a prostate exam. It may be uncomfortable for just a moment, as the doctor inserts one well-lubed finger into the rectum (two, if he wants a second opinion) to feel the size of the prostate. But that check is the first sign of prostate trouble. And women need regular Pap smears and pelvic exams to detect the signs of HPV or the first signs of cervical cancer. We recommend one every year for most women, or every six months if you have a history of HPV or abnormal Pap smears.
